Fuel Coffee, 19th Avenue

It’s been a strange first quarter of 2007.  As we emerge from the darkness (literally here in Seattle ) of winter into the light of spring, I’m attempting a change in my world view.  I’m calling it ‘forced optimism’.  To manifest good things into my life, my recent art attempts to exploit the term “optimistic”.  To me, glitter is all encompassing of the spectrum between the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’.

As a medium, it’s on the opposite end of ‘high art’.  It lands firmly in the ‘craft’ family.  In its positive visual form, it resembles sugar, thick with sweetness.  In its negative form, it resembles crushed glass, jagged with cruelty.

I associate the colors pink and white with sugar-y goodness as well.  Maybe they remind me of a bakery or birthday cakes.  To me, the colors are sooo sweet that I only want to use them occasionally.  As April blows in with its beautiful pink and white blossoms, I’m almost overwhelmed every time I step outside.  I want my life to smell like a donut shop, something that will satisfy my heart’s sweet tooth.

This spring, whether I’m swallowing sugar or glass, I’m making it my goal to keep smiling.
