| It’s been a
strange first quarter of 2007. As
we emerge from the darkness (literally here in
Seattle
) of winter into the light of spring, I’m attempting a change in my
world view. I’m calling it
‘forced optimism’. To
manifest good things into my life, my recent art attempts to exploit the
term “optimistic”. To
me, the glitter is all encompassing of the spectrum between the ‘good’
and the ‘bad’.
As a medium, it’s on the opposite end
of ‘high art’. It lands
firmly in the ‘craft’ family.
In its positive visual form, it resembles sugar, thick with
sweetness. In its negative
form, it resembles crushed glass, jagged with cruelty.
I went to my first Y camp at age 21 while
going to college. I was a
counselor of 11 & 12 year olds in an open-air cabin named ‘Kalakala’.
My brain remembers nostalgically – I focus on the forest,
cabins, (camp)fires and animals. I’ve
attempted to funnel those selective memories through my current
optimistic lens to create this series.
There was just so much beauty and wisdom at camp.
What would camp be without singing?
I envision “I met a
bear…” as the first in a series of songs.
Using recycled show cards, vinyl letters and Italian paper clips,
I’ve put down one of my favorite songs in words.
If you remember the song, I hope you like the piece.
Either way, whether I’m swallowing
sugar or swallowing glass, I’ll remember to smile.
